Spicy Turkey with Baked Sweet Potato Recipe

This spicy turkey goes great with baked sweet potato for a simple midweek meal.

This easy recipe is trivial to customise to what you have in the fridge – vegetables such as mushrooms, pepper, courgette or aubergine can all be used.

And if you don’t have any sweet potato to hand (or it just isn’t your thing), you could alternatively serve with rice, pasta or mash.

The numbers below will make for the two servings and take around 45 minutes.


To make 2 servings

  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 250g turkey mince
  • 500g passataCould swap for a tin of chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 clove of chopped garlic
  • Your choice of additional vegetables, chopped (optional)E.g. Peppers, mushrooms, courgette, aubergine, etc.
  • 1 tablespoon BBQ sauceCould swap for ketchup if you prefer
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder or paste (adjust to taste)Could swap for some cayenne pepper
  • Salt & Pepper
  • A little oil for frying

How to make spicy turkey with baked sweet potato

  1. Prick the sweet potatoes with a fork and bake at 200 degrees/180 degrees for fan ovens for 45-55 minutes or until soft all the way through.
  2. In the mean time, add a splash of oil to a large frying pan over a medium-low heat and add the onion. Fry for 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Add in the garlic and cook for a further 30 seconds.
  4. Stir through the chilli powder or paste for a further 30 seconds. Adjust the amount depending how hot (or not) you like it.
  5. Add in any chopped extra vegetables you’re using such as mushrooms, pepper, courgette or aubergine.
  6. Add in the turkey mince.
  7. Cook over a high heat until the turkey is lightly browned and any liquid has evaporated.
  8. Pour in the passata together with the BBQ or tomato sauce.
  9. Season to taste with salt and pepper. You could also add more chilli powder/paste or perhaps some hot sauce.
  10. Simmer for 15 minutes and serve alongside the potatoes.
  11. You could also serve with pasta or rice.
