Simple Home-Made Pizza Sauce Recipe

Here’s a super simple recipe to make your own tomato pizza sauce.

While you can buy such sauce ready-made in the shops, it’s cheaper and super easy to create your home made version for use in a variety of recipes.

Keep the sauce in the fridge for up to a week or allow to cook and freeze. When you want to use it, defrost in the fridge.


To make 1 serving

  • 1 carton (500g) passataCould swap for chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, peeled an chopped
  • 1 clove of chopped garlic or a teaspoon of easy/lazy garlic
  • 1 tablespoon tomato purée
  • 1 teaspoon dried oreganoAdjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basilAdjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (Optional)Adjust to taste
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to make homemade pizza sauce:

  1. In a sauce pan or big frying pan, heat a little oil over a medium-low heat and add the onions. Fry until softened (about 10 minutes).
  2. Add in the garlic and fry a further 30 seconds.
  3. Add in the tomato purée, passata (or chopped tomatoes), sugar, herbs, salt & pepper. Bring to the boil and then allow to simmer on a low heat for at least half an hour until thickened and reduced.
  4. You can use immediately or allow to cool and place in the fridge for up to a week.
  5. Alternatively, split into freezer bags and freeze for up to three months. When you want to use, defrost in the fridge or in warm water.

You can use this sauce for all sorts from simple pizza toast to a pizza pasta bake.
